Daisy Nell and Captain Stan perform traditional songs of the sea

Daisy Nell and Captain Stan

Daisy Nell and Captain Stan, singers, songwriters and musicians, will perform at the Abbot Public Library for the "Marblehead Reads" program for families and kids ages 5 and up on Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. in the Meeting Room. Steve Wainwright, bass player and Marbleheader, will accompany Daisy and Stan. Their music is about the sea and shore. From Essex, Mass., they bring alive New England's maritime history through traditional songs of the sea. Familiar voices on the North Shore music scene, Daisy and Stan are known for their broad repertoire of traditional folk, chanteys, and contemporary songs.

Daisy has been associated with school programming for many years as a free-lance in-school artist, nursery school music teacher, and museum educator. She also has written and implemented on board interpretative programs on various vessels, including the Mimi and the schooner Adventure. She wrote the signature song for Adventure, among others. This January, Daisy and Stan performed at the inauguration of Governor Deval Patrick.

You can find Daisy Nell and Captain Stan on the web at www.daisynell.com.

Admission is free, but seating is limited and registration is required. Please call the Abbot Public Library at 781-631-1481 to sign up. Signup for families and kids ages 5 and up (no younger siblings, please) begins March 1.

Daisy and Stan's performance will help celebrate "Marblehead Reads," the town-wide program to encourage all residents to read about the true story of the whaleship Essex out of Nantucket. The Essex was sunk in 1820 by an enraged sperm whale. Three books tell the story of the voyage and its aftermath: In the Heart of the Sea and Revenge of the Whale, written by National Book Award winner Nathaniel Philbrick, for adults and young readers, respectively. The third book, written by Jil Fine for children in grades 4–7, is titled The Whaleship Essex: the True Story of Moby Dick.
