David Coffin to perform and educate at Marblehead High School

David Coffin

Musician, performer, and educator David Coffin will be presenting his program entitled “The Wreck of the Whaleship Essex: A True Story in Song” during the school day on Tuesday, March 6 at Marblehead High School (find info on this program on his website). In addition to programs and concerts on maritime history, David has performed Early Music Enrichment Programs for school children throughout New England for decades. He serves currently as the Director of Education for the Boston Early Music Festival.

David’s MHS program ties in directly with the Marblehead Reads book selections of Nathaniel Philbrick’s In the Heart of the Sea and The Revenge of the Whale. Philbrick’s books and David Coffin’s program focus on the doomed voyage of the Whaleship Essex, a vessel carrying one of David’s ancestors.

The program will be performed for 200 students in grades 9–12. Funding is provided through the generosity of the MHS Parents Council and a grant awarded to the Abbot Public Library from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Mr. Coffin is also presenting a program at the Marblehead Veterans Middle School on Monday, March 5 and a maritime concert (with Kent Allyn) at the Performing Arts Center at the Middle School on Sunday, March 11, at 2 p.m. The performance is free for all ages.
