In the Heart of the Sea author to speak in Marblehead on March 14

Nathaniel Philbrick

Historian, sailor and best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick will be in Marblehead at the Performing Arts Center at the Marblehead Veterans Middle School at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14 to talk about his National Book Award winner, In the Heart of the Sea. Residents throughout Marblehead have been reading In the Heart of the Sea for the program Marblehead Reads. Philbrick also wrote a version of the book for young adults called Revenge of the Whale: The True Story of the Whaleship Essex, that many school-aged children from Marblehead have been reading. Another book by author Jil Fine, The Whaleship Essex: the True Story of Moby Dick, was written for children from grades 4 through 7.

“We’re so fortunate to have Nat Philbrick join us for our program” said Bonnie Strong, Director of the Abbot Public Library. “We’re looking forward to learning about the development of his book and stories he can share about the whaleship Essex, which was a huge news story in America in 1820.”

Philbrick is also the author of the current best seller, Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community and War. He lives and works in Nantucket, Mass. Visit him on the web at www.nathanielphilbrick.com

Marblehead Reads is a program made possible by a competitive Federal grant awarded to the Abbot Library. The grant was made possible through the Library Services and Technology Act and is administered on the state level by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The program includes a series of events throughout the month of March, 2007, which has been dubbed “Marblehead Reads Month” by the Marblehead Board of Selectmen.
