We are your one-stop, full-service Community Information Center!! The staff of Abbot Library strives to meet all of your informational needs, whether you want reviews of a consumer product, research on an academic topic, a copy of the newest bestseller or information about the schedule of a Marblehead organization. A top priority is customer service, and we believe our website will help us dramatically expand the variety and quality of services that we can offer you in a fresh, convenient-to-use format.

Funding to build the first library came from Benjamin Abbot’s will. He gave money to construct a building "for the benefit of the inhabitants" of Marblehead "because it was my birthplace." As a result, Abbot Hall was completed in 1877 and included space for a library. The Town then appropriated $20,000 to the newly created Abbot Public Library and the Library came into existence in 1878 in the room which now (and while the Library was there) houses the painting "The Spirit of ‘76". In 1953-54, a new building was built on the present site. In 1991, a new wing was added and much of the building was renovated.

Originally Abbot Library offered books only to the adult population. Now we offer books of interest to babies as well as senior citizens! And we offer so much more than books!! There are videos, audiobooks on tape or CD, CD-ROMs, music CDs, magazines and of course the world of electronic information, from magazine articles to research databases and the rest of the Internet. No longer is service given only in person; many services can be delivered by phone, email and fax (781-639-0558. We know that we will continue to grow and change as we provide the best library services possible to Marbleheaders.
