The following are online research resources of the Abbot Public Library made possible in part by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) in cooperation with the Northeast Massachusetts Regional Library System (NMRLS), and the North Of Boston Library Exchange (NOBLE). For resources that require a password, use your Library barcode number.
EBSCO offers more than 16 databases to search by subject, author, or magazine title for full-text articles in over 2,000 magazines, newspapers and journals online. Or find other material such as maps, photos, transcripts and more. Databases are MasterFILE Premier, Academic Search Elite, Primary Search, Middle Search Plus, EBSCO Animals, Fund & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia, Newspaper Source, Business Source Premier, Regional Business News, Professional Development Collection, ERIC, Health Source-Consumer Edition, MEDLINE, Health Source-Nursing/Academic Edition, and Clinical Pharmacology. See our new HISTORY RESOURCE CENTER and SCIENCE RESOURCE CENTER databases in EBSCO. Click on the EBSCO link and search individual databases or click on "Continue" and select "All databases" in the drop down menu.

bigchalk eLibrary is easy to use! Electric Library is a full-text database of consumer-oriented magazines, books, newspapers, newswires, television and radio transcripts, photographs and maps. Key in your request in natural language, and you won't be disappointed. You can limit your results to an appropriate reading level, including elementary school, middle school, high school and beyond.

Answers…To Go is a service designed to assist library patrons by e-mail or chat at hours when their local public library is not open. Use the web site to ask questions and get answers from a Reference Librarian in real time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Kids Search is a colorful interface that's designed for students through the eighth grade, and for teachers. It searches the Primary Search database, a children's dictionary and encyclopedia, and a collection of images. The Teacher Resources include Academic Search Elite, the Professional Development Collection and ERIC.

Learning Express is a database of interactive skill-building practice tests based on such official exams as the SAT, ACT, GRE, GED, TOEFL, Real Estate Agent or Broker exam, U.S. Citizenship, Police & Firefighter exams and many more. Practice tests include instant score reports that help target skill areas that need the most attention. Complete answer explanations and immediate feedback help the user to understand why an answer is right or wrong.

All NOBLE libraries have access to a collection of NetLibrary e-books through a contract with the Boston Public Library and the Regional Library Systems. The collection includes over 3,000 NetLibrary e-books plus over 3,000 additional public domain titles (such as classic works of fiction). When you access NetLibrary from a computer located outside of the library, you'll be asked for your library card barcode number. Type in all the digits, but not the spaces. To check out an e-book, you'll need to set up a free account with NetLibrary (click on "Create a Free Account" in the upper right hand corner of the NetLibrary homepage). This account is not related to your library account.

HeritageQuest Online™ combines digital, searchable images of U.S. federal census records with the digitized version of the popular UMI® Genealogy & Local History collection and other valuable content. This online database is an essential collection of unique material for both genealogical and historical researchers, with coverage dating back to the late 1700s. Researchers can use HeritageQuest Online to find their ancestors, trace their paths across America, and learn what life was like in the areas where they settled. Also, come into the Abbot Public Library for free use of another new genealogy database called Ancestry.com (restricted by the vendor for library use only).
