JULY 2017 PROGRAMS

Makey Makey and Scratch Workshop
Tuesday, July 11th, 3:30 pm
in the Lower Level Meeting Room
Registration Requested – Sign Up is in the Children’s Room

We’re going to invent!
We’re going to game!
We’re going to program and code!
We’re going to build stuff!
We’re going to play (safely) with electrical circuits!
We’re going to do ALL OF THAT IN ONE WORKSHOP!

Using Scratch, we’ll code our own game or animation. Then, we’ll use Makey Makeys to build personalized controllers out of recycled materials. No prior coding experience is necessary.

Note: If you can’t come on July 11, we’ll be running this workshop again in August!

Sheep To Sweater Tuesdays
Tuesdays, July 18th and 25th, and August 1st, 3:30 pm
in the Lower Level Meeting Room
Registration Requested – Sign Up is in the Children’s Room

In this three-part series we’re going to explore the history, math, science, and craft that takes plants, animals, and even plastic from fluff to fashion. There will be lots of hands-on opportunities and you’ll come away with artwork you really and truly made from scratch! Come to all three workshops for the full picture, or just come when you can.

July 18: Meet The Fluff and Color Theory
Explore different types of fiber, pet some wool that just came off the sheep, and learn about the ways colors mix (or don’t mix!). We’ll even get to dye some yarn!

July 25: Spin a Yarn
Humans have been spinning fiber into thread, string, and yarn for thousands of years. We’ll look at different kinds of spinning technology (including a spinning wheel), build our own spindles, and make our own yarn.

August 1: Weave It All Together
Using the yarn we made in Week 1 and Week 2, we’ll create our own woven art pieces or finger knitting.

No Time To Attend A Program? No Problem!

There will be lots of opportunities for things you can grab quickly and do in the comfort of your own home!

Make-Away Crafts will be available in the Teen Room and include both materials and instructions for a craft you can do on your own. Kits will include bookmarks, friendship bracelets, book sculptures, and more!

The Teen Reading Challenge 2017 is still going! Grab a form from the Teen Room and get reading. Return finished forms to the Teen Librarian for prizes!

Don’t even want to leave home? You can always get e-books on OverDrive (including required Summer Reading titles). And check out Audiobook Sync for two free audiobooks each week!

JUNE 2017 PROGRAMS

Teen Advisory Group (TAG)
Tuesdays, June 6th, 13th, and 20th, 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm
in the Upper Level Conference Room

Abbot Public Library’s Teen Advisory Group needs you! We’re looking for teens to help us make the Teen Room YOUR space. We’ll plan events, pick books for the collection, and maybe even complete some library-related service projects. If you love the library and want to do some community service hours that make a real difference, consider joining! The Teen Advisory Group meets every Tuesday from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm in the Conference Room at Abbot Public Library. Signup forms are available in the Teen Room and at TAG meetings. This is a volunteer opportunity for grades 7-12.

Button Afternoon June!
Weekday afternoons, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

We have a new button maker in the Teen Room, and to celebrate we’re making buttons all month long! If you have a picture or design you want to bring we can make it into a button, OR you can use a blank template and our craft supplies to let your imagination run wild. (Don’t want a pin? We also have magnets!)

The button maker will be available on weekday afternoons from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm in the Teen Room.

SUMMER READING IN THE TEEN ROOM

Books on the school summer reading lists for students entering 7th-12th grade will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. They can be found in the Teen Room starting June 24th and will be available through September.

For those of you who are digitally-inclined or travelling, we’ll have as many Summer Reading books as we can available on OverDrive in both eBook and eAudiobook versions. They’re completely free with your library card, and once you’ve downloaded the file, you don’t need internet or cell service to read or listen.

The return of Make-Away Craft Kits!
Don’t have time to come to the library for a program during your busy summer? Grab a Make-Away Kit when you come for your Summer Reading books. Inside you’ll find materials and instructions for a craft you can make anywhere!

There’s Still Time to Start the Teen Reading Challenge 2017
Want to read more or read different in 2017? Take our Reading Challenge! Read at least one book in each category, and write down the title/author of the book you read. Challenge sheets are available in the Teen Room. When you’ve finished, bring your sheet back to the Teen Librarian for a prize!

Free Audiobooks for Keeps!
If you’re an audiobook listener, or if you want to start, check out Audiobook Sync! Every week from April 27th to mid-August there will be two free audiobooks for download through OverDrive. Best of all, there’s no waiting and no returns! The books are yours to keep! Visit their website for a full schedule and more details.
