Artist Statement: “Last year, after living in Metro-West MA for decades, I moved to the North Shore. This exhibit documents my experience living in a new town and my new (and old) inspirations: cityscapes, seascapes, and old sepia photos.

Throughout my art career, I have been drawn to the energy and boldness of cityscapes. That has not changed. Living on the coast, my occasional interest in boats and seascapes has naturally exploded–every day, the local landscape holds drama for me. There’s one more new inspiration for me: an interest in painting vintage family photos that I have collected, going back generations. This interest was fueled by my discovery of a bin of old photos in a vintage store in Salem. I loved the stories these reference photos suggested.

Although diverse in subject matter, these paintings are all images from my daily explorations and serve as a visual journal, documenting my spin on my new world.”

Up Close & Personal

Janet Schwartz is a life-long educator with a passion for painting and a degree in Art Education. For many years, she worked in education in the corporate world, putting off her artistic interests while she raised a family, went back to school, and worked full-time as a corporate trainer. Five years ago, she had her first solo show, “Inspired Works,” which included paintings from her work environment–office buildings, conference rooms, offices, and traffic–all very bold and with dramatic light. This is where her love of painting traffic and urban landscapes began and consequently led to her leaving a full-time job to have more time to paint. She currently devotes most of her time to teaching art, doing demos, and creating and exhibiting award-winning paintings throughout New England.

Janet is a signature member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod and a member of the Copley Society of Art, the Pastel Society of America, Concord Art Association, Marblehead Arts Association, Connecticut Pastel Society, Pastel Society of New Hampshire and others.
