“Rainbow of Quilts: Part Two!”: New Quilts by Margarita Blumkina
September 6, 2014 @ 9:30 am - September 27, 2014 @ 5:00 pm
The Abbot Library is delighted to present an exhibit of a new collection of quilts by prize-winning local quiltmaker Margarita Blumkina. Like the quilts in her first exhibit at the Library, in April, 2013, these quilts are notable for their vibrant colors and uninhibited combinations of printed fabrics, only partially tamed by the overall geometric pattern providing structure to the design. A member of Marblehead’s Seacoast Quilting Guild and the Hammersmith Quilting Guild, of Saugus, Margarita works with an almost dizzying variety of new and vintage textiles, bringing order to splashy florals, calico prints, batik fabrics – sometimes producing reversible quilts with complex designs on both sides.
In her talk, “A Quilter’s Confessions and Dirty Little Secrets,” Margarita will share her approach to quiltmaking, her methods and techniques, as well as hints and tricks developed through her extensive experience. To accompany her talk, she will show examples of quilt projects in progress.
One of Margarita’s quilts will be raffled off at the artist’s talk on September 21st. Raffle tickets may be purchased at both the reception for the exhibit, on September 14th, and on September 21st, the date of Margarita’s talk. Funds raised through the quilt raffle will be donated to the Friends of Abbot Library, the group providing support for Library programs and museum passes. The quilt to be raffled, which measures approximately five feet square, is very colorful, with floral and patterned fabrics, and features a playful pinwheel motif within a traditional square patch design. It will be on display during the exhibit.
